The population in the territory of Risnjak National Park is very small. The general demographic trend in the Gorski Kotar region is ongoing depopulation.
According to the 2001 Census, there are only 61 inhabitants living in a few villages in the area added to Risnjak National Park in 1997 (in contrast to the 82 inhabitants in the same area in 1991). Some villages are now completely deserted.
There are no more than 20 residents per village, consisting mainly of elderly people. There is a real danger that these hamlets will eventually be deserted as well
